Our STENDKER discus fish were already 15 cm tall and about 18 months old when the animals were used, three years ago.

Our 3 year journal of our STENDKER discus in a planted Juwel Rio 450. Before installing this aquarium in 2017, we were keeping our Stendker discus in a much larger two meter set that we decided to remove and replace with this smaller model instead. To go from a large tank to a smaller one is unusual for most fish keepers, but we did it because we noted that most beginners strongly believed that Stendker discus can only thrive in a large pool which was incorrect, we did not like to see the size of the aquarium taking all the credit.
The truth is, our fish are vigorous and healthy because thats how they arrive from the STENDKER-hatchery, the water volume has very little to do with it. Whether a person lives in a small apartment or a large house, these Discus fish are possible to keep happily in a moderate sized aquarium as long as the STENDKDER instructions are very closely followed.
Instead of the 2 meter aquarium we opted to switch for a smaller Juwel Rio 450, which aesthetically we find more suitable for our environment and its also much quicker to maintain. The aquarium is 450 liters (150x50x60 cm) and initially started with the support of a second external filter (JBL CristalProfi). Originally the plants were kept sparse, but with the addition of CO2 injection and enhancing the lights the growth has become more dense and we had to reposition them every few months to create maximum space for our fish to swim. We always use the swimming and feeding pattern of our discus fish as a guide when trimming and maintaining their layout. The aquarium also keeps minimum number of driftwood roots and rocks to avoid fish injuries and scratches.
Our strict rule is to never compromise the requirements of our discus fish and to achieve optimum water conditions by finding simpler solutions. The temperature is 29-30 celsius, we feed our fish three beef heart meals (Good Heart) daily following the instruction of the hatchery, and to control the water condition we increase the number of our cleaning crew to keep the set up clear from debris and waste.
When the aquarium was new, more water changes had to be performed to reduce the development of algae and stabilize the chemistry, but after several months it was reduced to one water change per week between 25% to 50%, with the pH regularly maintained at 7 and with weekly dosage of required minerals.
We also ensure that all our companion fish and community (including Amano shrimps and Nerite snails) and all our aquatic plants are Stendker-safe and come from tested stocks to avoid introducing any risks. We strongly dislike medications and avoid them at all costs, instead we prefer to eliminate all risks as a preventative measure and to protect the immunity and condition of our fish for a stress-free experience.
This summer we decided to split our Stendker discus fish into additional Juwel Rio aquariums and decided to introduce a group of new classic strains in this set which includes Brilliant Turquoise, Santarem, Red Turquoise, Kobalt, Stendker Tefe, and Red Scribbelt.
